In pics: Why is a black president a big deal?
Barack Obama's made history as America's first black president,
but why's it such a big deal he's got the top job?
In the 17th and 18th centuries hundreds of thousands of Africans were sold into slavery in America and made to work on cotton and tobacco plantations.
In 1865 slavery was abolished, but black people still didn't have equal rights and had to go to separate schools, churches, and even had to play on different footie teams.
In 1955, this woman, Rosa Parks, sparked protests by refusing to give up her bus seat to a white man - which was against the law at the time.
The protests were led by this man, Martin Luther King, who said he had a dream that one day black and white people in America would be able to come together as equals.
In 1964 the country made a huge leap forward with the introduction of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which made it illegal to treat people differently because of their race.
But until now, the top job has always gone to a white man, so it's a huge deal for America, and the rest of the world, that Barack Obama has become president.
It is hard for me to listen to the song "Love is here " by Tenth Avenue North. Why? because I've been working so hard, so very hard and it's been in vain because when I look back I have absolutely nothing to show for it. So the part of the song that says: "Come to the Father ,you who work and you'll work no more, All you who labor in vain... " the labor in vain part hits me hard and I realize I could have saved myself the trouble. If I had just gone to the Father He would have given me the work He had for me and I would not have worked so hard for nothing. What good is it if I gain the whole world and lose my soul? Promotions, cars, nice houses, work, work, work, in vain, in vain, in vain. It does nothing for the soul and when it's quiet and dark and you have to face yourself in the dark you realize that you really have nothing but sweat and tears and a sure grave that will not let you bring anything with you when it's time to fill it. Painful truth. Right now I think I am finallly in the place where God has put me and even though it is a job I am not laboring in vain. I wish I had done this sooner it would have saved me all the trouble.
